SBCCD Awarded $5 million Grant to Assist Students with Disabilities

The San Bernardino Community College District (SBCCD) Technology and Educational Support Services (TESS) offices will be the new fiscal and oversight home, if not the physical location, of the Alternate Text Production Center (ATPC), currently housed at Ventura College. Awarded the $5 million grant by the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, the ATPC is the first publicly funded, system-wide resource dedicated to serving the alternate media needs of the largest post-secondary educational system in the world. There are 112 community colleges in California and each of them has equal access to the media services provided by the ATPC.

The Center for the Advancement of Nanotechnology (NanoCenter), at the San Bernardino Community College District (SBCCD), will offer two summer training cohorts this summer. One will start on May 23 and the other on July 25. Interested parties should visit www.attctraining.org or call 909.382.4001. Attendees may be able to take advantage of $4,500.00 worth of professional development training in Nanotechnology paid for by a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. A registration packet and additional information about the Economic Development & Corporate Training division of the SBCCD are posted there.

The Board of Trustees of the San Bernardino Community College District has officially appointed Bruce Baron as the new District Chancellor. Mr. Baron has been serving as the Interim Chancellor since December 2009.

Carleton W. Lockwood, Jr., President of the Board said, “We are fortunate to have such a seasoned educational manager who will bring the steady leadership that is so essential to this District, as we face the serious financial challenges initiated by state budget cutbacks. Chancellor Baron's vision of this Community College District is shared by this Board, and we look forward to supporting him with this vision

Training Available for Graduating High School Seniors

The San Bernardino Community College District’s Economic Development and Corporate Training division is offering grant-funded Career Training in Nanotechnology for interested graduating high school seniors in the Inland Valley. Participants must be at least 18 years of age by May 23, 2011. This initiative provides an opportunity for some of those high school seniors graduating this year for whom the dream of career training or a higher education doesn’t feel within reach.
